The World of Murcia

City, Beaches, Mountains

The province of Murcia lies in the south east corner of Spain and the capital of Murcia sits on a large flat plain which is surrounded by mountains. It is home to some beautiful, historic buildings including the city's cathedral built in the 15th century and the architecturally impressive Church of San Juan de Dios. It is now a very popular university city that attracts both Spanish and international students who love the city's laid back vibe. It is also one of the fastest growing areas for luxury golf properties in Spain.

Murcia is one of the most picturesque regions of Spain, with mostly sunny days throughout the year. A pleasant climate with annual temperatures hovering around 21º C, and 250 km of shoreline along the two seas – the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean. Murcia is a region of great contrasts. The entire area is dotted with mountainous national parks, southern basins with steppe landscapes, and wonderful beaches at La Manga, Mazarrón and Calblanque. The "Costa Cálida" (warm coast) features 150 miles of beautiful unspoiled, pristine, sandy beaches as well as gentle coves, dunes & Nature Reserves.

The region also has a rich history to boast of, which is depicted with highly representative buildings such as the Cathedral and the Casino in the capital, the Roman Theatre in Cartagena, the medieval castles of Lorca & Mula, 30 museums, 22 castles, and remains of ancient fortresses can be found all over the region.

Getting there is easy, low cost airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet operate regular flights to the regions main airports at San Javier (Murcia) and Alicante and a new airport at Corvera is due to open in 2009. Getting about is even easier with a new high speed train link to Madrid meaning the capital is only a two hour train ride away and a new motorway network which connects the main cities and tourist resorts of the region.
